For a participatory museum: the DOMiDLabs
Museum Selma sees itself as a place for everyone. For this reason, urban society should be involved in the development process of the museum at an early stage. To this end, DOMiD, the museum's sponsor, launched the project DOMiDLabs: Labs for Participatory Museum Design together with the German Federal Cultural Foundation in 2021. DOMiD provides detailed information about the four labs, the creative process and the experiences in an online brochure.
Each lab team dealt with various questions, for example: How can people meet in a museum? What can an exhibition look like that responds to current debates? How can stories be exhibited respectfully? This resulted in participatory design concepts that were shown in four exhibitions at various cultural venues in Cologne between 2022 and 2024.
The answers gained will help DOMiD to create an appealing, diverse and polyphonic Museum Selma. DOMiD has collected the lessons learnt from the project team's collaboration with the participants, curators, scenographers and spaces in the labs. The online brochure summarises how the project was prepared, launched and implemented with participation as a compass, resulting in a joint, participatory exhibition.
The brochure is available as a free download on the DOMiD homepage.
DOMiDLabs was funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation from 2021 to 2024.
