Museum Selma: The name itself is a central part of the museum's identity.

"We've been waiting a long time to finally share the name with the public," says Dr. Robert Fuchs, CEO of DOMiD, the museum's parent organization.

Why Museum Selma?

"We sought a unique name that was easy to remember, had international appeal, and aligned with the concept of our migration museum," explains DOMiD marketing manager Timo Glatz. "The name Museum Selma combines a Celtic meaning of 'beautiful view' with Arabic roots signifying 'harmony' and 'peace'."

We consciously chose to use a woman's name to emphasize the female perspective, especially in the context of migration, which is often perceived as a predominantly male phenomenon.

Selma is a common female name across many countries and languages, making it a statement for the diversity of voices that will be heard in the future museum.

The Museum Selma will be Germany’s future national migration museum, commissioned by DOMiD and set to open in Cologne in 2029. It will showcase how migration has shaped German history and continues to influence our society today.
